Big Buddha / Wat Phra Yai
The large Buddha statue is one of Samui’s best-known sights. From Blackjack, combine this temple stop with nearby Wat Plai Laem.
What to expect
The twelve-metre golden Buddha sits on the small island of Koh Faan, connected to Samui. Wat Phra Yai is both a religious site and a striking viewpoint on the northeast coast.
The background
The landmark dates from the 1970s, rather than being a centuries-old ruin. The downward-pointing right hand represents the Buddha calling the earth to witness.
Our visitor tip
After looking up, look out too: enjoy the coastal panorama rather than only a frontal photograph. Light is often gentler later in the afternoon. Stay on authorised paths and viewing areas; we do not recommend climbing the coastal rocks.
Things to watch
Steps and sun-heated surfaces make a visit harder in the midday heat. Cover shoulders and knees, and remove shoes wherever requested. A little preparation turns a quick photo stop into a more relaxed temple visit.
