Secret Buddha Garden / Tarnim
Tarnim is a sculpture garden in Samui’s hills, not a working temple. It adds an inland discovery to your stay at Blackjack.
What to expect
Human, animal and mythological sculptures stand among trees, water and mossy stones. The garden traces back to fruit farmer Nim Thongsuk, who began his personal sculpture project in 1976.
The background
Despite the name Secret Buddha Garden, this is not an ancient Buddhist temple. It is a privately created sculpture garden. That personal origin distinguishes it from Samui's major temple complexes.
Our visitor tip
Walk slowly and look for smaller figures among the familiar photo subjects, including musicians and animals. The atmosphere beneath the trees is part of the experience; one visitor specifically praised the shade.
Things to watch
The garden is compact and the approach is mountainous. Mossy paths and steps can be slippery and are awkward for pushchairs. Closed shoes with grip and mosquito protection are useful. Change plans in heavy rain. If you lack experience on steep island roads, choose a driver rather than practising scooter riding here. Conflicting visitor accounts do not establish a blanket requirement for a 4x4.
The mountain roads can be steep; choose transport suited to the conditions.
