Wat Plai Laem
Wat Plai Laem features striking religious figures around its lakeside temple complex. It pairs well with Big Buddha on a trip from Blackjack.
What to expect
White figures, colourful roofs and a pond make this complex distinctive. It brings together Chinese and Thai religious imagery. The present temple complex developed in the 2000s.
Look closer
The large figure with eighteen arms is Guanyin, not the historical Buddha. On the other side you will find the smiling Budai. Knowing the difference reveals more than simply a colourful photograph.
Our visitor tip
Allow time for the temple interior and wall paintings when open. A walk beside the pond adds another perspective on the large statues; visitors particularly praise the interior views.
Things to watch
Cover shoulders and knees and follow instructions about removing shoes. Part of the route to nearby Big Buddha follows a busy road—nearby does not automatically mean a relaxing walk. Hot ground is another reason to avoid the midday heat.
